February is National Children's Dental Health Month

Each February the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children's Dental Health Month to help raise awareness about the importance of good dental hygiene. Sunrise Dental annually celebrates this health awareness month through a variety of activities. Call or visit us for more details and to take part in this exciting month.

While it's very important to get children to brush their teeth twice a day as well as floss, this is not always the easiest task to do. One way to encourage children to have good oral health habits is by making dental hygiene fun. Buy toothpaste in their favorite flavors or toothbrushes with their favorite characters on them. Or even better, take them to the store and have them pick out their own supplies to get them excited about getting to use their new tools.

You can also find mouth rinses or colored tablets that are to be taken before brushing your teeth to color the areas that have plaque. This will be fun for your child to have a colorful mouth and useful in making sure his or her teeth are completely clean.

Routines are also important. Brushing and flossing the same times each day (usually once in the morning and once before bed) help establish a precedent, so children know what is expected of them. It'll make brushing their teeth just part of their day instead of a chore they have to do. Making it a family affair and brushing your teeth together will also make it an activity they don't want to be left out of.

While February is National Children's Dental Health Month, it is also important to remember your dental health. Are you brushing, flossing and getting regular check-ups as often as you should be? If not, now is the perfect time to start! It’s a New Year, and time for new healthy habits to be born.
